From a young age, Pilar’s life had been a testament to overcoming obstacles. Stricken by polio at just 18 months old, now in her 60’s, Pilar has spent her entire life navigating the world from a wheelchair. Yet, she’s never allowed her condition to define her. She married young, and with her husband’s unwavering support, they raised three beautiful children in their tiny home in Cocula, a small Mexican village. Despite their humble circumstances, their home was filled with love and determination.

Her husband, a skilled carpenter, did what he could to modify their modest home to accommodate her needs, so Pilar could cook, do laundry, and manage household chores. Her wheelchair was more than just a necessity; it was her “freedom to live,” as she often said. It allowed her to care for her family and contribute to their happiness.

 A year ago, tragedy struck their family when her eldest son, Hector, was involved in a horrific accident. At 41, Hector was a devoted father of four and a diligent worker. One evening, while driving home from work on his motorbike, he was struck by a drunk driver. The accident resulted in a spinal fracture that left him paralyzed from the waist down. The news devastated Pilar. Seeing her son, once so strong and independent, confined to a bed was heart-wrenching.  Hector’s journey to acceptance was arduous. He struggled with the sudden change in his life, grappling with feelings of anger and helplessness.

Today was a significant day for both Pilar and Hector. Thanks to Chair the Love, Rotary Club Internacional in Guadalajara in partnership with two Rotary Clubs from Utah, they each received new wheelchairs. Pilar’s old chair had been in poor condition for years, and the new one promised enhanced comfort and mobility. Hector, on the other hand, was receiving his first wheelchair, a crucial step in reclaiming his independence.

The ceremony was held in a small church building, filled with friends, family, and well-wishers. As Pilar wheeled herself onto the stage to accept her new chair, the crowd erupted in applause. Her husband stood beside her, his eyes brimming with pride. Pilar’s heart swelled with gratitude. She knew this new chair would further empower her to care for her family and continue her role as the matriarch of their household.

 When it was Hector’s turn, the room fell silent. He maneuvered himself into his new wheelchair, adjusting to the feel of it. As he looked up, his eyes met Pilar’s. She gave him an encouraging nod, and he felt a surge of determination. With a deep breath, Hector wheeled himself across the stage, drawing strength from his mother’s unwavering spirit.

 After the ceremony, Pilar and Hector sat side by side, their new wheelchairs gleaming in the afternoon sun. Pilar reached over and took her son’s hand. “We have new beginnings, mi hijo,” she said softly. “This chair is not the end, but a new chapter. We’ll face it together, with love and courage.”

 Hector squeezed her hand, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. He turned to the crowd, and with a voice filled with emotion, he spoke. “You don’t appreciate mobility until you lose it. My respect for my mother has grown immensely since my accident. Attitude is everything, and today I got my legs back.”

 Tears filled Pilar’s eyes as she listened to her son’s heartfelt words. She knew that Hector’s journey was just beginning, but his newfound determination gave her hope. They faced the future with hope, their spirits unbroken, ready to embrace the freedom to live fully once more.
